One of the most ubiquitous and technologically important phenomena in nature is the nucleation of homogeneous flowing systems. The microscopic effects of shear on a nucleating system are still imperfectly understood, although in recent years a consistent picture has emerged. The opposing effects of shear can be split into two major contributions for simple atomic and molecular liquids increase of the energetic cost of nucleation, and enhancement of the kinetics. In this perspective, we describe the latest computational and theoretical techniques which have been developed over the past two decades. We collate and unify the overarching influences of shear, temperature, and supersaturation on the process of homogeneous nucleation. Although we primarily focus on simple systems, we also touch upon the sheared nucleation of more complex systems, including glasses and polymer melts. The total number of faculty members at the university is 457, including 314 assistant professors, 63 associate professors, and 80 full professors. The study group included 177 (38.7%) of 457 faculty members. The dependent variable of the study is the attitudes of the faculty members towards earthquake preparedness. The independent variables were age, gender, marital status, having children, living with or without children, duration of residency in Karabuk. In addition, these were also included as variables, respectively, type of housing, property ownership, work experience, exposure to natural disasters in the past, and the awareness that Karabuk is a first-degree risk earthquake zone. The data were collected using a descriptive questionnaire and Mulilis-Lippa Earthquake Preparedness Scale. Dysnatremia is a common finding in these patients. Here we present a 12-year-old boy with multiple admissions due to hypernatremia and was repeatedly misdiagnosed. An eventual diagnosis of ROHHAD syndrome was made by integration of the previous ignored findings of sleep apnea and obesity. The diagnosis of this rare but potentially fatal syndrome should be considered in patients with dysnatremia associated with obesity and sleep apnea disorders.Overhydration (OH) remains a recurrent problem in peritoneal dialysis (PD), with deleterious effect in outcomes. Recent evidence suggests a direct relation between OH and increased peritonitis risk. The mechanisms of this connection are not well defined, but gut wall edema and malnutrition are probably involved.
Our aim was to assess OH as a risk factor for peritonitis in patients on PD. Retrospective study was done in a PD program with a bio impedance analysis. The investigator reviewed patient charts and documents. The Fresenius® Body Composition Monitor was used to obtain hydration parameters. OH was considered when Overhydration/Extracellular Water (OH/ECW) parameter was over 15% of the dry weight. The diagnosis of peritonitis was made according to the International Society of Peritoneal Dialysis guidelines. Associations between peritonitis rate and the collected variables were assessed using Chi-square test and Pearson's correlation.
An association between OH and the risk of peritonitis was established.
OH is prevalent in our patients undergoing PD and it is a modifiable risk factor for peritonitis. The bio impedance analysis is economical and should be used in association with a physical exam and treatment results to achieve the normo-hydrated status in those patients.
